Dose Scores Twice In Debut, But Artesians Fall In Snohomish

SNOHOMISH, Wash. – Lily Dose scored twice in her Oly Town Artesians debut and Leah Magee added a goal and two assists but the Snohomish Skyhawks scored three times in the second quarter and added a pair of goals in the fourth quarter to outlast the Artesians, 7-5, at the Snohomish Soccer Dome on Saturday night.

The Artesians opened the scoring when Leah Magee laid a perfect pass on the break to 17 year-old Lily Dose, who slammed a shot past Snohomish keeper Kaitlin MacKenzie just 46 seconds into the game to take a 1-0 lead. The Skyhawks answered with 8:59 left in the first when M’ily Morton scored to tie the game, 1-1. Magee gave the Artesians a 2-1 lead six minutes later but Snohomish again had an answer with Brooke Pingrey tying the game, 2-2, just before the end of the first quarter.

The Skyhawks opened up a two goal lead quickly in the second quarter, first breaking the tie and taking a 3-2 lead when Stephanie Hines found a weak spot in the Artesians’ defense at the 12:52 mark of the first quarter and then scoring a power play goal by Jillian Nicks to make it 4-2 with 10:25 left in the half after Oly was hit with their sixth foul and a blue card for foul accumulation. At the time, the Skyhawks were called for only one foul were only called for four fouls through the third quarter before picking up four fouls in the fourth quarter.

Maria Reyes got the Artesians to within a goal with six minutes left in the half off a restart by Aubrey Smith, but the Skyhawks answered again two minutes later on Maggie Tonkin’s first goal of the game and they took a 5-3 lead into the break.

Artesians starting goalkeeper Olivia Brock made a couple of fantastic saves on one-vs-one situations but there was nothing she could do about a handful of Snohomish’s goals. She was relieved by Emily Sorenson to start the second half and the Artesians defense got organized in front of her and held the Skyhawks scoreless in the third quarter. Dose scored her second goal and Magee got her second assist just 51 seconds into the second half and Oly Town went to the fourth quarter down by just a goal, 5-4.

But Snohomish opened the fourth on a nice combination that saw Nicks finish a pass by Sandra Osborn and the Skyhawks took a 6-4 lead just 21 seconds into the quarter. Oly killed a power play midway through the fourth but Tonkin scored her second goal to give the Skyhawks a 7-4 lead with 5:17 left. Snohomish finally committed their sixth foul and were given a blue card with 4:11 left, but MacKenzie and the Skyhawks killed the power play. Shannon McMahon made it a 7-5 game on a penalty shootout after being taken down with a clear path to the goal with 1:28 left, but it was too late and the Skyhawks held off the Artesians pressure to preserve the victory.

The win moved the Skyhawks to 1-1-0 while the Artesians fell to 1-1-0. Snohomish currently sits in second place with the head-to-head playoff tiebreaker.

The Artesians will travel to Tacoma on Saturday night to face first place Tacoma Narrows. First kick at the Tacoma Soccer Center is currently scheduled for 6:15.
